Center of Industrial Fish & Fisheries (IFF):

The Centre for Industrial Fish & Fisheries (IFF) was introduced in Cachar College, Silchar from the Academic Session 2002-2003 with the initial financial support from UGC and the syllabus of it was framed as per UGC guidelines as a vocational subject. The centre was established with the initiative of the then Head, Dept. of Zoology and Coordinator, IFF, Late Shyamal Kanti Paul and other faculty members of the Dept. of Zoology and necessary support from the College Authority. Since then, the faculty members of the Dept. of Zoology shouldering the responsibility of teachings and running of the Centre as there is no separate faculty for the Centre.
Consequent upon the inception of the centre, the concerned authorities of the affiliating university, the Assam University, was approached for its affiliation and become affiliated. Initially the affiliating university conducts examinations on the Industrial Fish & Fisheries (IFF) as a vocational subject (FisV) and with the increase in the number of aspirants to continue the study with the subject; it is transformed as a Core Subject (FisP) at par with other General/Pass core subject. During recent years, the average intake of students in the subject is 80 and the affiliating university has separate BUGS for IFF under the school of Life Sciences.
