Department of English:

The Department of English, Cachar College was founded on 20/06/1960 along with the inception of the College itself. The Department progressed since then under the able stewardship of eminent teachers like Jogendra Nath Choudhury, Shubir Dutta Gupta, Jyotilal Choudhury, Shantanu Ghosh, Pranab Kar, Dr. Rama Prasad Biswas, Dr. Sontosh Ranjan Chakraborty as faculty members. The Department could surely scale great academic heights. At the inception it had Pre-University and Three Years Degree Course in Arts and Commerce to which Honours course in English came to be added in 1965-66 session and thereafter in 1985-86 the Science Stream came under the Govt. Deficit System of the grant-in-aid in 1990. Presently it’s a full fledged Department of three streams with Honours, Pass and Alternative English courses. The faculty members have rendered their effort to keep up the prized legacy set by the Department. Many of its alumni have found themselves well placed in academic and associated circles far and wide. The Department attracts greater number of under graduate students both in Pass Course as well as in Honours Course in comparison to the other departments of Arts faculty of the college. Good care is taken to improve the performance of the department. Along with teaching all the faculty members are associated with research activities and are engaged actively in the corporate life of the college in various capacities. The department has arranged for invited lectures on selected topics and field visits relevant to the English Honours syllabus. As future plan, to hold national seminar, workshop and publication of a departmental journal will be given due importance.
