Department of Economics:

The inception of the Department of Economics dates back to the very establishment of the College in 1960. Over this more-than-six-decade-long period the Department has professionally pursued its goal of imparting quality education in Economics. The Department offers both honours and general degree programmes in Arts and Science streams. Every year the Department admits students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds with differentiated levels of academic achievements.
While the syllabus at the undergraduate level is handed down by the affiliating university, the faculty members take utmost care to ensure that the learner sitting on the last bench in the classroom is benefitted. The teaching-learning process is designed in such a way that it is empathetic towards the slow learners while giving due attention to the advance pupils.
Study of Economics requires skill in handling mathematical, statistical and econometric tools at the undergraduate honours level. The choice based credit system introduced by Assam University in tandem with most of the leading varsities in the country at the instance of the UGC, has a very important component. Now we have a uniform syllabus across the country. This passage to a new ecosystem has indeed helped our students with the most updated syllabus. Our learners today are in no way behind their friends in the metropolitan universities and other star institutes of higher education as far as the syllabus is concerned.
Efforts are on to expose our motivated learners to standard tools of advanced econometrics and empirical research in this new paradigm. The skill based courses in both general and honours programmes are add on features which help the BA and B Sc students land jobs after they migrate from campus to market.
