Department of Botany:

The Department of Botany, Cachar College, Silchar has since its inception in the year 1982 been offering Pre-University/Senior Secondary Course in Biology (Botany) and started to offer B.Sc. pass course in Botany from 1985. The Department has started imparting B.Sc. Honours course from 1994. Govt. of Assam has sanctioned five posts of Faculty members in the year 1990. The faculty members are well qualified, who besides teaching, have also been pursuing research. The major areas of their current research interests include Plant Taxonomy, Ethnobotany, Microbial Ecology, Agricultural Microbiology, Microbial Technology, Microbial Genomics, Bioprospecting, Bioinformatics, Plant Biochemistry, Stress Biology, Plant Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, etc. The teachers have published over 50 research papers in journals of National and International repute. They have, in addition, authored/edited a number of books/course materials. The faculty members of the Department have conducted a number of research projects sponsored by UGC, DBT and ASTEC. This has led to better infrastructure and facilities for the students. Students of the Department are performing well in their examination and are actively participating in National/Regional level seminar, conference, workshop, etc. The alumni of the Department established themselves as teachers, scientists, professional and rendering services in Govt. as well as corporate sector. The Department organizes seminars, conference, workshop, popular talk, webinars, etc. to keep the students abreast with the latest information in the field of plant sciences. The Department frequently organizes educational tour cum excursion visits to research and educational institutes and industries to provide hands-on training to the students. The Department also organizes field excursions to educate students about the natural habitats of diverse plant groups. The Department has one News Letter “Botanica” which is updated on monthly basis and publishes articles by students, information about placement, study and research opportunities. It also gives update about the upcoming events and activities of the Department. published research papers At present, the Department is well groomed with highly qualified, research minded and passionate teachers who are constantly striving to achieve excellence in terms of uplifting academic excellence and research acumen of students in plant sciences not only in Assam but in NE India as well.
